Questions an Enterprise CI System Should Answer

In our webinar on Build-Deploy-Test-Release Automation in the Enterprise (replayable here), we observed that there are a number of questions that cut across teams. These are questions that we suggest than an enterprise system should be able to help with. A couple people asked for the list of questions we presented in the slides. Here they are:
  • What source code was used to build what’s in production?
  • Are we getting more or fewer security violations than we used to?
  • Is production configured the same as the test environment?
  • Are there any libraries the developers are using that have known vulnerabilities?
  • What build was in production on Feb. 12, what was in it, and who put it there?
  • Is the guy who built this, the same as the guy who deployed it?
  • Did the tests all pass for the build we put into production six months ago?
  • How many new tests did we add in the last 3 months?
  • Is there a correlation between code churn and test failure rates?
For those of you who watched the webinar, I hope the list is helpful when thinking through your own systems. For those who didn't and find the list intriguing, what are you waiting for? The replay is available now.

We had some great questions come in during the Q&A time that we weren't able to get to. We'll try to run down some of those in the next few days.
